WWJ–Great Lakes IT Report: Leaders & Innovators Interview with Hyaat Chaudhary

Carbon Media Group produces digital content for outdoor enthusiasts, connecting brands through digital and content advertising. In addition to its more than 600 websites for the outdoor, action, and agriculture industries, Carbon Media Group has a network of YouTube channels and recently launched CarbonTV.com. Clients include Allstate, Home Depot, Chevrolet, and John Deere. Under Chaudhary’s leadership, Carbon Media Group increased its revenue by more than 30 percent in 2013 and plans to hire an additional 20 employees this year. The company was named one of the Detroit Free Press’ Top Workplaces in the state of Michigan and one of the 2014 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch. Prior to joining Carbon Media Group, Chaudhary spent seven years in venture capital and private equity, as well as founding and serving as the CEO of eBrands, an ecommerce company. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and accounting from Emory University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

WHERE BORN: “Toledo, Ohio.”

MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONS: “My father, mainly because he grew up in a small village in Pakistan as one of 13 kids and his parents died when he was 12. He made his way here, became a doctor, raised four sons, and provided us with the best education in the world.”

LAST BOOK READ: “I just finished The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni.”

WORDS THAT DESCRIBE ME: “Positive, innovative, ambitious.”

WHERE MY FIELD/INDUSTRY IS HEADED: “The advertising world is always changing but we’re spending more and more time online and on devices. And the advertising industry is absolutely moving in that direction. The cable world and broadcast world will be completely different in five years as everything becomes digital.”

FAVORITE TECHNOLOGICAL GADGET: “I have a slew of home automation gadgets that I control mainly from phones or computers, such as connected lights, security camera, and my TV.”

FAVORITE PLACE: “For our five–year anniversary, we went on safari in Africa to Kenya and Tanzania and it was amazing. After the safari, we went to an island called Zanzibar, and it’s completely untouched.”

FAVORITE HOBBIES: “I grew up playing ice hockey. Also, skiing and anything on the water – I feel at peace when there’s water around me.”

FAVORITE FOOD: “French fries with a fair amount of salt.”

MY HIDDEN TALENT: “I grew up playing chess with my brothers and dad and got really good to the point where I was the top player in Ohio and one of the top in the country. I went to nationals and was trained by two Ukrainian grand masters who tutored me.”

HOW I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED: “As somebody who pursued my dreams and wasn’t afraid to pursue my dreams while being an amazing husband and father.”
